The #2 Republican In The Senate Will Call It Quits

Senate Democrats will get an unexpected pick-up opportunity, as Republican Whip, Senator Jon Kyl will announce his retirement later today. Kyl was elected to the Senate in the 1994 class, and would have had to run in 2012. He also would have been term-limited as Whip under GOP Caucus rules, and would have had to challenge Leader Mitch McConnell for Leader to stay in the Leadership. Republicans looking to run include Congressman Jeff Flake and former Congressman John Shadegg, although one shouldn't could out J.D. Hayworth. None of these figures are particularly intimidating politically, particularly if the GOP doesn't run well for President. Democrats rumored are former State Party Chairman Jim Pederson and former Attorney General Terry Goddard. I'd personally like to see Homeland Security Secretary and former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano run for the Senate seat.
