The Rendells Split, And Political Marriages

I was sad to recently read that the Rendells have "amicably parted ways" since he left the Governor's Mansion on January 18th. To me, it sounds like it was planned since it happened as they left office. After 40 years of marriage, one of the ultimate couples in government say you can invite them both to the same social events, and it'll be fine, but they no longer live together.

They obviously hold different schedules. He now writes a sports column and appears on MSNBC, and she is on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, or one step from the U.S. Supreme Court. They made it 40 years, but now split. It seems to be what they want, so let's not harp on that. How hard does it appear it is to keep a relationship in government and politics? In recent years we've seen the Gores split, the Ensign scandal, the Sanford scandal, the John Edwards implosion, Eliot Spitzer, and of course, Newt Gingrich, to name a few messy marriage endings and sexual indiscretions. Are they all bad people? No. These people live in a high stress world, where marriages struggle for air, and often fail. Public life is hard, and for a marriage or relationship to last through a term in office is actually impressive if you ask me. All of this should put Bill and Hillary Clinton's marriage, which has by the way lasted, in a whole different light.

In any event, Governor Rendell remains my favorite Governor of my lifetime. It's time we all get over the relationship status of our public leaders.
