Meet the GOP Field: Will They Or Won't They?

And finally, the maybe-rans, or probably not-rans in some cases.

  • Mitch Daniels- Governor of Indiana. Chalk him up as the most likely to run this time. He's a popular Governor and former OMB Director under President Bush 43. He's popular at home, but possibly too mild on his rhetoric to win. As a budget hawk, he hold positions that are outside of the mainstream on how to balance the budget, a fact that may not be helpful in a general election. At one point he said no way to running. Now, it's an open question.
  • Jeb Bush- former Governor of Florida. Not likely to run. Aside from the problems he'd have in a nomination fight, from re-hashing his brother's Presidency to immigration, Bush would be nearly un-electable in 2012. He'll wait four more years.
  • John McCain- Senator from Arizona. Yes, he's super old, but he has been the critic-in-chief of this administration, and if he could be nominated, would have a chance to say "I told you so." He can't win the nomination, and frankly wouldn't do much better, if at all, than he did in 2008. Try explaining the Palin choice. Better yet, try not picking her.
  • Dick Cheney- former Vice-President of the United States. Cheney would have a hard time convincing anyone he's healthy enough to be President, and that's before dealing with his 8 years as VP. This is a long-shot, but he has been a harsh, harsh critic of the President.
